1688 vs Alibaba: Which Platform Is Better for Overseas Buyers?

Understand the practical differences between 1688 and Alibaba before comparing suppliers, pricing and order terms.

Alibaba and 1688 can both lead to Chinese suppliers, but they are designed for different buyers. Treating them as interchangeable often produces misleading price comparisons and unnecessary communication problems.

What Alibaba is designed to do

Alibaba.com is an international B2B marketplace. Supplier pages, messaging, payment tools and trade terms are designed around export buyers. English communication is common, export packaging is easier to discuss, and many sellers understand international compliance and shipping documents.

What 1688 is designed to do

1688 serves China’s domestic wholesale market. Listings are usually in Chinese, prices may assume domestic payment and delivery, and quoted specifications can differ from export requirements. It can expose a wider domestic supply base and useful price signals, but the visible price should not be treated as a ready-to-export landed price.

Why a 1688 price may look lower

  • The listing can show the lowest price tier or a simpler specification.
  • Domestic packaging may not be suitable for international parcel delivery.
  • Chinese tax, payment and inland delivery assumptions may differ.
  • Export documents, testing, labelling and consolidation are usually not included.
  • Communication and quality follow-up may require a China-based operator.

Choose based on the stage of your business

Alibaba may be more efficient when you need direct English communication, export experience and a relatively simple transaction. 1688 can be valuable when you have a clear specification, someone able to communicate in Chinese, and a process for payment, consolidation, inspection and export handling.

Compare like with like

Do not compare a 1688 listing price with an Alibaba delivered quotation. Normalize material, size, packaging, logo method, MOQ, defect allowance, Incoterm and freight assumptions first. Then calculate the landed cost and the operational work required on each route.
